Increasingly, online criminals appear to be getting away with it.

The other evening, the head of one our best-known banks asked me if I had any idea about the prevalence of cybercrime.

Every day, he said, his organisation and its customers were under attack. They were swamped, the authorities were swamped.

The following day, I bumped into a friend, a well-known City figure. He was livid — his email account had been hacked, money had been stolen, and the bank and authorities seemed not to want to know.
